Rede zur Kundgebung von „Kiel for Palestine“

Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde,

Mein Name ist Lili Sommerfeld, ich bin Jüdin und ich bin heute hier um zu sagen: Israel spricht NICHT in meinem Namen!

Ich stehe hier als Teil der Jüdischen Stimme für gerechten Frieden in Nahost. Wir stehen hier zusammen, Jüdinnen und Juden, Muslime, Christ*innen, Palästinenser*innen, Israelis und Deutsche. Und wir alle sind vereint im Widerstand gegen die Besatzung, die Apartheid und die andauernde Nakba.

Am vergangenen Samstag habe ich in meiner Heimatstadt Berlin auf einer Demo gesprochen. Dort stand ich gemeinsam mit meinen palästinensischen Brüdern und Schwestern, die gerade mal wieder nachts nicht mehr schlafen können aus Angst um ihre Familien in Gaza. Einige haben auch letzte Woche wieder Verwandte verloren. Doch jetzt gibt es einen Waffenstillstand! „Hurra!“ sagen viele in Europa, endlich wieder Ruhe! Doch ein Waffenstillstand bedeutet noch lange keinen gerechten Frieden und darüber müssen wir heute sprechen.

Gerade in Deutschland erleben wir, wie schwer es uns gemacht wird, wenn wir für ein freies Palästina unsere Stimmen erheben. Wie selten es uns ermöglicht wird, palästinensische Lebensrealitäten sichtbar zu machen. Zu groß ist die deutsche rassistische Angst vor arabischen Stimmen, zu groß das blinde Vertrauen in den deutschen Partner Israel.

Doch eigentlich weiß es selbst die deutsche Mehrheitsgesellschaft längst: Die Situation, in der Palästinenserinnen und Palästinensern seit Jahrzehnten sind, ist unaushaltbar. Ob sie in Ostjerusalem, im Westjordanland, in Flüchtlingslagern, in Gaza oder selbst in Israel leben. Eigentlich, wenn Deutsche sich mal trauen genau hinzuschauen, wenn sie Organisationen wie Human Rights Watch, B’tselem oder den zahllosen palästinensischen Initiativen zuhören, dann wissen sie das alles längst. Die Informationen sind längst verfügbar.

Also frage ich euch, liebe Medienvertreter*innen, lieber Politikerinnen und Politiker in Deutschland: HOW ARE WE GONNA FIX THAT? Was ist euer Plan? Wollt ihr nach jeder sogenannten Eskalation, nach den tausenden Verletzten und Toten, wollt ihr Palästinenser*innen wieder zurückkehren lassen in einen Alltag voller Unterdrückung? Werdet ihr weitere 54 Jahre zulassen, dass euer Freund und Partner Israel Menschen- und Völkerrecht verletzt, während er mehrere Millionen Leute unter Militärbesatzung hält? Während er hunderte Minderjährige ohne Anklage in Administrativhaft festhält?

Lasst ihr zu, dass Palästinenser*innen, die seit Generationen in Ostjerusalem leben, aus ihren Häusern in Sheikh Jarrah und Silwan geworfen werden, damit jüdische Familien aus Brooklyn, New York dort einziehen können?

Lasst ihr zu, dass die Westbank weiter durch Straßen zerstückelt wird, auf denen nur jüdische Siedler fahren dürfen? Dass im Stadtzentrum der größten palästinensischen Stadt Hebron eine jüdische Enklave geschaffen wurde, die Palästinenser*innen nicht betreten dürfen und in der 700 jüdische Siedler von 2000 Soldaten bewacht werden? Dass die Besatzung in regelmäßigen Abständen Menschenleben fordert, wenn der nächste schwer bewaffnete Soldat sich von einem palästinensischen Kind bedroht fühlt?

Lasst ihr zu, dass diese Unterdrückung zwangsläufig wieder und wieder in Gewalt und noch mehr Gegengewalt umschlägt?

Oder erkennt ihr endlich an, dass auch ein Waffenstillstand für die Menschen in Palästina noch keinen Frieden bedeuten kann? Wenn die Rückkehr zum Status Quo nur weitere Besatzung, Apartheid und Siedlerkolonialismus mit sich zieht, dann ist der Status Quo keine Option mehr!

Aber Deutschland hat ein Problem. Deutschland hat eine schreckliche Vergangenheit. Aber anstatt für diese Vergangenheit echte Verantwortung zu übernehmen, versuchen gerade viele Kräfte in Deutschland die Schande der eigenen Nazivergangenheit in unsere migrantischen Communities abschieben.

In der vergangenen Woche habe ich zahlreiche Interviews gegeben. In jedem einzelnen wurde ich gefragt, ob ich angesichts der sogenannten „antisemitischen Demonstrationen“ in Deutschland nun als Jüdin in Berlin-Neukölln mehr Angst hätte. Darauf antworte ich:

Angst habe ich, wenn der Kanzlerkandidat der größten deutschen Volkspartei den rechtsextremen Hans-Georg Maaßen vor Antisemitismusvorwürfen schützt, während er unsere gemeinsame jüdisch-palästinensische Demo in Berlin als antisemitisch brandmarkt.

Angst habe ich, wenn er dabei vom Antisemitismusbeauftragten der Bundesregierung Felix Klein unterstützt wird.

Angst habe ich, wenn die rechtspopulistische AfD, die mit 13 % im Bundestag sitzt, vom Holocaust als Vogelschiss spricht, während sie politisch gleichzeitig stramm an der Seite der israelischen Regierung steht.

Angst habe ich, wenn ich etwa zehn Mal am Tag eine Schlagzeile über den angeblich „importierten Antisemitismus“ lese, während Neonazis in Neukölln Autos anzünden und private Daten von linken Berliner*innen sammeln, aber der Zeitungsartikel darüber auf eine halbe Seite passt.

Ich fordere hiermit die deutsche Öffentlichkeit auf, die Mehrheitsgesellschaft, die Medienvertreterinnen und -vertreter, die Politik: Lasst nicht zu, dass die Schuld eurer Vorfahren euch den Blick vernebelt! Euer „Nie wieder“ MUSS ergänzt werden. Es reicht nicht zu sagen: Nie wieder darf das Juden passieren. Es muss heißen: Nie wieder darf so etwas irgendjemandem passieren! Die Lehre aus den Verbrechen der Nazis MUSS die Charta der Menschenrechte sein, nicht die koloniale Politik Israels.

Wir werden es nicht länger tolerieren, dass die deutsche Politik mit zweierlei Maß misst: Wenn Palästinenser*innen sprechen von „From the river to the sea“ - „Vom Jordan bis zum Mittelmehr“, dann fordern sie eine Anerkennung der Opfer der Nakba 1948. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

Israelis jedoch müssen „from the river to the sea“ schon lange nicht mehr aussprechen, denn sie kontrollieren sowieso längst das gesamte Gebiet. Die völkerrechtswidrigen Siedlungen im Westjordanland, die rücksichtslose Landnahme, die kontinuierliche Vertreibung aus den Häusern Ostjerusalems verfolgen letztendlich einen einzigen Zweck: die Judaisierung des gesamten Gebiets – From the river to the sea. Diese ethnische Säuberung Palästinas IST die andauernde Nakba.

Und wie steht Deutschland dazu? Ein gestottertes „wir verurteilen den Siedlungsbau“ von Heiko Maaß bei gleichzeitiger Waffenlieferung? NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Wir fordern, dass sich die deutsche Regierung endlich an die eigenen Standards hält. Dass sie Freiheit, Selbstbestimmung und Menschenrechte nicht nur der Bevölkerung Israels zugesteht, sondern auch der Palästinas. Dass sie aufhört sich hinter dem Schutzschild der angeblichen Antisemitismusbekämpfung zu verstecken und den Tatsachen ins Auge sieht: Israel ist ein Apartheidsstaat. Und Apartheitsstaaten sind keine Demokratien.

Doch es gibt auch Hoffnung: Mit jedem Tag wächst die Solidarität mit Palästina,  und das auf ganzen Welt. Große Teile von Fridays for Future und Black Lives Matter haben sich bereits mit uns solidarisiert. Und auch wir jüdischen Stimmen -– in Europa, den USA, aber auch in Israel – werden immer lauter, weil wir uns nicht länger for den Karren eines unterdrückerischen Systems spannen lassen wollen. Keine Besatzung dauert ewig. Kein Apartheidsystem bleibt für immer bestehen. Und wenn die deutsche Mehrheit nicht schon wieder auf der falschen Seite der Geschichte stehen will, dann sollte sie so schnell wie möglich der Tatsache ins Auge sehen, dass wir längst eine globale Bewegung sind: Jüdinnen und Juden, Palästinenser*innen und alle anderen, die mit uns solidarisch gegen Unterdrückung kämpfen. Wir sind da, wir sind laut und keine Diffamierung der Welt wird uns auseinander bringen. Wer Frieden, Gleichberechtigung und Menschenwürde für ALLE Menschen zwischen Jordan und Mittelmeer möchte, der kann nur eine Forderung haben: Free Palestine!

Dear friends,

My name is Lili Sommerfeld, I am jewish and I’m here today to say: Israel does NOT speak in my name!

I stand here as a member of the Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East. We stand here together, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Palestinians, Israelis and Germans. And we are all united in resisting occupation, apartheid and the continually ongoing Nakba.

Last Saturday I spoke at a demonstration in my home city, Berlin. There I stood together with my Palestinian brothers and sisters, who once again cannot sleep at night, tormented by fear for their families in Gaza. Some of them again lost relatives last week. Now, however, there is a ceasefire! "Hurray!" say many in Europe, finally, there is calm in the region! But a ceasefire is a long way from a just peace and this is what we must discuss today.

In Germany in particular, we experience the difficulties placed upon us when we raise our voices for a free Palestine. How rare are the opportunities to make the realties of Palestinian life visible. Too great is the racist German fear of Arab voices, too great the blind trust in Germany's partner Israel.

In fact, however, the majority of German society has known for a long time: : The situation in which Palestinians have been forced to live for decades is intolerable. Regardless of whether they live in East Jerusalem, in the West Bank, in refugee camps, in Gaza or even in Israel. The fact is, if Germans dared to look closely, if they were to listen to organisations such as the Human Rights Watch, B'tselem or to the countless Palestinian initiatives, they would have known all this long ago. The information has long been readily available.

And so I ask you, dear representatives of the media, dear politicians in Germany: HOW ARE WE GONNA FIX THAT? What is your plan? After every so-called "escalation", after the injuries and deaths of thousands, do you want to just let Palestinians return to a daily life of continual oppression? Will you allow your friend and partner Israel to violate human and international law for another 54 years while keeping several million people under military occupation? Thus while holding hundreds of minors in administrative detention without charge?

Are you going to permit Palestinians who have lived in East Jerusalem for generations to be thrown from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan so that Jewish families from Brooklyn, New York can move in?

Are you going to allow the West Bank to continue to be carved up by roads on which only Jewish settlers are permitted to drive? That in the center of the largest Palestinian city, Hebron, a Jewish enclave has been created which Palestinians are prohibited from entering where 700 Jewish settlers are guarded by 2,000 soldiers? That the occupation regularly claims lives when the next heavily armed soldier feels threatened by a Palestinian child?

Will you continue to allow this oppression, which invariably turns again and again into violence and even more counter-violence?

Or will you finally recognise that even a ceasefire cannot mean peace for the people of Palestine?

If the return to the status quo only entails further occupation, apartheid and settler colonialism, then the status quo can no longer be an option!

But Germany has a problem. Germany has a horrendous past. However, instead of taking real responsibility for this history, many forces in Germany are trying to transfer the shame of their own Nazi past to our migrant communities. 

In the past week, I have given numerous interviews. In each I have been asked if, in light of the so-called "anti-Semitic demonstrations" in Germany, I felt more afraid as a Jew living in Berlin-Neukölln. To which I reply:

I am afraid when the candidate for chancellor of the largest German political party protects the right-wing extremist Hans-Georg Maaßen from accusations of anti-Semitism, while he at the same time decries our joint Jewish-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin as anti-Semitic.

I am afraid when he is supported in these efforts by the German government's anti-Semitism commissioner, Felix Klein.

I am afraid when the right-wing populist AfD, which holds 13% of the seats in the German Bundestag, speaks about the Holocaust as "bird droppings" while at the same time standing firmly behind the policies of the Israeli government.

I am afraid when around ten times a day I read a headline about so-called "imported anti-Semitism", while at the same time neo-Nazis in Neukölln set cars on fire and collect personal and private information on left-oriented Berlin citizens, but the reporting in newspapers on this matter fits on half a page.

I hereby call upon the German public sphere, the majority of German society, representatives of the media, German politicians: Do not allow your view to be clouded by the guilt of your ancestors! Your "Never Again" must be augmented. It is not enough to say that this never again can happen to Jews. The phrase must be that something like this can never be allowed to happen to anyone! The consequence of Nazi crimes MUST be the Human Rights Charter, not Israel's colonialist policies.

We will no longer tolerate this double standard in German politics. When Palestinians speak of "From the river to the sea" - "From the Jordan to the Mediterranean", what they are demanding is recognition of the victims of the Nakba of 1948. Nothing more and nothing less.

Israelis, however, have for a long time had no need to say "from the river to the sea", because they control this entire area in the first place. The settlements in the West Bank, which are illegal under international law, the ruthless seizure of land, the continuous expulsion of Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem ultimately pursue a single purpose: the Judaization of the entire territory - From the river to the sea. This ethnic cleansing of Palestine IS the perpetual Nakba.

 And what is Germany's position on all of this? A stuttered "we condemn settlement construction" by Heiko Maaß while at the same time continuing to supply Israel with weapons? NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

We demand that the German government finally adheres to its own standards. That it grants freedom, self-determination and human rights not only to the people of Israel, but also to the people of Palestine. That it stops hiding behind the shield of alleged anti-Semitism and faces the facts: Israel is an apartheid state. And apartheid states are not democracies.

But there is also hope: with each passing day, solidarity with Palestine grows, and it is growing all across the globe. Large portions of the Fridays for Future and Black Lives Matter movements have shown solidarity with us. And our Jewish voices - in Europe, in the United States, but also in Israel - are getting louder and louder, because we refuse to be bound to an oppressive system. No occupation lasts forever, just as no apartheid system forever remains in power. And if the majority of German society does not wish to again be on the wrong side of history, it needs to face this fact as soon as possible, that we have long since become a global movement: Jews, Palestinians* and all others who fight in solidarity with us against all forms of oppression. We are here, we are loud and no defamation in the world will tear us apart. Whosoever desires peace, equality and human dignity for ALL people between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea can only have one demand: Free Palestine!
