Stellungnahme der Jüdischen Stimme zur “Hebrew Language Week in Berlin” (Woche der hebräischen Sprache in Berlin)

Samstag, 30. November 2013

Statement of the Jüdische Stimme regarding the “Hebrew Language Week in Berlin:”

The “Hebrew Language Week in Berlin” has a promising title. Berlin is a city with a long history of Hebrew culture, which was violently disrupted in the Holocaust. The week is planned to start on November 30th.

However, the Jüdische Stimme was disappointed to learn that the week is organized and funded by the World Zionist Organization (WZO), which marks it as an Israeli “hasbara” (public diplomacy) event, rather than a genuine celebration of the Hebrew language and culture in the city. Despite what its title suggests, the focus of the “Hebrew Language Week” is, in fact, on Israeli culture rather than on local Hebrew culture. The event’s website mentions a WZO agent who is linking up with Hebrew and Jewish initiatives in Berlin to strengthen the connection of Jews in Germany with Israel. The agent is exerting influence over such initiatives by offering funding to generate support for the Zionist project.

The WZO is taking advantage of the emerging Hebrew culture in Berlin in order to develop a program which implies that all Hebrew and Jewish Culture do, and must, center around Israel. According to its mission statement, the WZO is “dedicated to instilling the centrality of Israel and Jerusalem its capital deep within Jewish consciousness, encouraging the return to Zion.”

We strongly reject the idea that Israel owns the Hebrew language and culture, and we find this connection a direct affront to our life in Europe. Many of us speak and/or read Hebrew, and it does not make us into supporters of Israel. We renounce all attempts to reduce the diversity of Hebrew or Jewish life to a narrow political opinion or state allegiance.

While the WZO’s Department for Diaspora Activities is attempting to appropriate Jewish and Hebrew cultural initiatives in Berlin for Zionist purposes, its Settlement Department, which is heavily funded by the Israeli government with hundreds of millions of NIS, is one of the central mechanisms for the subsidizing of illegal Israeli colonization in the occupied West Bank, through the brutal displacement of the indigenous Palestinian Population. This stands in violation of international law.

Among the violations of the WZO are the allocation of private and public Palestinian land to illegal Israeli colonies. These allocations include 5,000 dunams in the Jordan Valley (confiscated in 1979) and 29,000 dunams in other areas of the West Bank, confiscated in 1994.

The WZO continues to escalate its investment of resources in the colonization of the West Bank with funding from the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture. The budget of the Settlement Department of the WZO increases annually.

As European Jews, members of the Jüdische Stimme see this event as an aggressive attempt to take over Jewish identity and to subvert it to the services of an apartheid state. The Jüdische Stimme is opposed to the intervention of the World Zionist Organization in Jewish life in Europe.

The Jüdische Stimme calls on organizations and individuals not to participate in the week’s events. We publish this letter to remind people that Jewish identity and the Hebrew language should not be associated with colonialism. We strongly believe in the importance of Hebrew culture in Berlin (and elsewhere) and do not want to have it tainted with the involvement and funding of an illegal colonialist organization. We look forward to participating and assisting in organizing cultural events celebrating the Hebrew language based on values of equality and respect for all people and peoples.
